What are Neodymium magnets?

Neodymium magnets are scientifically identified as NdFeB magnets and they’re a form of rare earth metal that exhibits the most magnetic properties of any element on the periodic table. They’re commonly sold and purchased in disc and circular shapes, as seen in the magnets above. 

 

These magnets were developed cooperatively by General Motors and Sumitomo Special Metals in 1984 and their invention has propelled technological advancement since much of our modern technology relies on these rare earth metals. 

What are Neodymium grades?

Neodymium grades range from N35 (lowest magnetism) to N52 (highest magnetism). Scientifically speaking, the N refers to the maximum energy product or (BH)max which is the maximum power that the magnet can be magnetized to hold. The higher the number, the higher the BH(max) and ultimately, the higher the price. We find the best balance between price and performance is neodymium grades N42. 

Are Neodymium magnets dangerous?

Neodymium magnets as a whole are not considered as dangerous, however, they can cause harm if mishandled. Neodymium magnets must not be handled by children or vulnerable people because swallowing two magnets can cause internal pinching which could ultimately lead to fatal injury. 

 

If you’re purchasing a magnet that exceeds 5mm in diameter, width or length, you need to be careful of the magnet(s) unexpectedly coming together and pinching your skin. Take extreme caution when handling magnets that have any dimensions 30mm or larger, because even the lower grades of these magnets can inflict damage if handled incorrectly. Never allow two magnets two clash against each other. It’s always safer to wear protective gloves when handling powerful magnets and if two magnets must be connected, to slide the magnets together rather than let them ‘jump’ or smash together. 

Can you drill Neodymium magnets?

It is not recommended to drill or saw Neodymium magnets because they are triple coated in a protective layer to ensure the element Neodymium does not corrode when exposed with oxygen and moisture.

Are Neodymium magnets fragile?

Neodymium is a naturally fragile element and excessive force can break the magnets. This happens with all Neodymium magnets and is a natural property of the metal. Magnets can be coated with an epoxy resin to avoid chipping and splitting in two on impact, however, these must be custom ordered. 

How long do Neodymium magnets last?

Neodymium magnets are permanent magnets, which means they hold their magnetism for a very long time. If the magnet has not experienced excessive heat (Above or magnetic pulses, the magnetism will last for over 100 years. 

 

The coercivity of a magnet (ability to withstand demagnetisation) can be increased at the point of manufacture by increasing quantities of certain elements. This means Neodymium magnets can be manufactured to withstand very high temperatures, up to 220°C.
